I find with this problems that I let the page load and when its finished it shows no select boxes, its not until I move the scroll bars that I start to see scroll boxes pop up.

Seems to be a combination of pc specs and the user scrolling the page or moving the window around while loading. There doesn't seem to be a set limit on how many form elements you can have... it just wigs out at different points on different machines. Unfortunately i don't have a solution for you.
