Well I am not "selling" anything quite yet - long way to go - am a believer
in open source to a degree however. My hosting provider us currently
refusing to receive any communication - let alone criticism - so any Oz
companies that can raise the bar for CMFX 6.1 hosting?

Subject: [cfaussie] RE: My CF web site

I kind of agree with what Taco was saying - we're not really able to look at
the CF code for these sites so its very difficult to give any feedback in
that area. What we are left with is presentation stuff & html which could be
better on the WSG list (http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/) But FWIW:

-------

Hi Peter

On the whole I really like it - mostly for its simplicity & consistency. Ok
enough of the nice stuff lets get started picking it to pieces :)

1 - can the nav grow? If so by how much. I really hate navs (like the one on
our site) that are implicitly limited. It looks like you're cool for another
2 or 3 items, but what then?

2 - Text links are good, nice one.

3 - I'm assuming webhomez did the graphic design for the site - fine, but if
you have their url on the site make it a link.

4 - Text headings are good. Graphical headings are bad.

5 - Your logo should be a home button.

Everything ok so far..... time to view source.

6 - You're HTML & CSS does not validate. Not the worst thing in the world
but it could be fixed very easily.

7 - Presentational HTML is evil. You're using font tags, but worse than that
you're using topmargin, height, etc.. which don't exist in the 4.01 spec.
Learn some CSS.

8 -           ?????? Learn
some CSS.

9 - <span class="heading2"> - pffft - <h2>.

10 - <span class="invisiblefont"><font size="1">i</font></span> - oh dear
what was that?

11 - <img src="gp.gif" width="1" height="1">??? The files doesn't even
exist.

On the whole I do like the site, with a bit of CSS & HTML work it could be
tops.

In terms of what Steve said about it - yes content is king. If you have
useful tools, put them up there. If you have useful content - ditto. Daemon
are the masters at this stuff. But.... if you don't have useful tools or
content don't just put crap up there (Disclaimer: I'm not implying that
anyone here has crap on their sites - but we have all seen it before).

In terms of making the site more personal.... this really depends on you &
how you like doing business. Do a search for "Cluetrain" for some
interesting reading. I agree in principle but there is a fine line there
somewhere. Maybe separating personal blog style stuff from the your
corporate site could be an idea.

Cheers

Mark
