> Can it be done without writing the resultset to a file?

Are you meaning you want to be able to cache a whole page or maybe just a
portion of it ?

And you don't want to write it to a file ?

You could do it. You would have to have some sort of key (if you are
using a CMS this should be trivial) and you would create an Application
structure using that key and would record your time and your content
there. Your routine would check that version for currency and, if still
valid, would serve up the previously generated content. If it was not
valid it would refresh the content and then serve up the newly refreshed
content - probably from your cache.

If you are asking if this is something out of the box.....

No - it's not.

FarCry - Daemon's CMS - provides the ability to arbitrarily cache any
portion of content on any page and independently set the cache timeout.

So - even if you weren't using FarCry - you could have a look at what they
do to cache content.

Having said all of that, SQL*Server is pretty efficient at caching queries
any ways, then you have the CFMX caching on top of that.

While it may be more efficient to implement your own caching, I think this
may end up being a case of trying to double-guess what the use may do
next.
