I think I was saying several things (but not very clearly or completely).

1. If CF optimises the compilation of the component and works out that
"variables" is what was meant when it wasn't specified - then it wont
matter if you add "variables." or not.

2. If it doesn't do the above at all and resolves the "scope" at runtime,
then there is always going to be a step to resolve scope (and this is more
likely as the engine will search all the available scopes at runtime to
locate a variable instance - you know - is it in FORM or is it in URL or
is it in CGI, or Application or Session, etc.)

3. Using the scope specifically may avoid the process described in item 2.
(above) but I have no idea how you would be able to measure it. It would
still probably resolve in the Java code to a call to get the scope named
"variables" and then a call to get the actual element in that scope. So
you would save a search for which scope was "closest".

It would really depend on how the Java was implemented - and they would be
free to change that during any subsequent release (so you could not rely
on it).

I have to say though, if you are getting down to worrying about that level
of optimisation then you would be better off using something different to
Cold Fusion.....

....probably C++ or Assembler ;)
