I would love to know more about the server architecture decisions on this site - how they worked out what the load might be and how they scoped it for that load. Does anyone have any input for that?

The decisions were made at a sleazy hooters bar one night after a few too many drinks. The way they worked out the load was, to take a packet of tooth picks, throw them in the air, and the ones that land on the table, was the expected total number of hits likely to visit the site. They then outlined a prison break style mud-map on a cocktail napkin, followed by some outlandish purchasing from Dell online.

They then went to the local petstore in search of hamsters, followed by the hardware store for a ball of string, ducktape, three large wheels (for the hamsters) and a lot of crazy glue.

The end result was a lot of DELL pc's running Counter-strike, while the hamsters generating power for the big chaos that which is the server room.

I'd say its a big success, especially since no hamsters were injured in the process of making JetStar crash....hmm... does invite a lot of confidence, in that if they can't stop their webservers from crashing, how the hell will they cope with a live plane? "oh we didn't expect this many people on the plane, which resulted in it being too heavy and well.. we learnt a lot and we assure our customers, that if you die on our flights, we will give you another one of equal value next time!"
