I had a similar problem.. and someone told me to set a cookie, something about the cookie will disappear when you close the browser and you can do things based on if the cookie exists or not. Hrmmm... I found a work around to my problem tho.
Can you not just use an exclusive lock? or set a timeout on the locking of the db?
