Breadcrumbs, as you allude, originate from the
Hansel and Gretel fable. They show a website visitor how they got to where they
are, as the breadcrumbs did for Hansel and Gretel. Rather than a simple discrete
"current" location, it shows the path followed to the location.
Google has plenty more links to the origin of the
term.
