Robin,

In your own words you have answered the point:-)

"Most of the partners seem to be very busy at present"

And why are they busy, because the jobs that do get advertised don't get
filled as easy, and the partners are busy because there is no one else
learning coldfusion to have these places filled... And how many jobs have
been very short term roles, what does this say to someone who needs to make
a living, what it says to me is don't learn coldfusion as you will not be
able to have a career out of it, and look elsewhere.

To clarify a point: when I say "partners" I'm talking about Macromedia Associate/Alliance Partners who are companies, not individual developers. They have a brand, do marketing activities, respond to RFPs, develop products etc. They do not get their work through a placement firm, but they may get their next employee from a placement firm.

The reason the partners I know are busy is that they've individually developed a reputation for delivering good business value, in part because with ColdFusion they can build more business solution for less development time.

The difference partners and people who work at partners have is that they've moved from selling programming services out to developing business solutions (as per my earlier post) and building client relationships.

Again, job security as an Australian vanilla programmer in any technology is decreasing rapidly. In the last month I have talked to two local companies who are sourcing their programmers offshore - Russia for ColdFusion and .NET, and India for Java.

In this environment it's probably not viable to be a career programming contractor in any technology unless you're a complete guru. If you don't want to work for someone else why not get together with some other contractors and start a company selling business solutions, that just happens to use CF.
