I personally baulk at the thought of relying on a client side document.write just to get the content from a different server. It's just kludging around the problem and it relies on the client to perform the very basics of page construction, too risky. Not to mention search engines will have problems indexing that sort of thing.
If you're going to be putting effort into any sort of coding, spend the hour or two it will take to copy over the frontend of the news app to the php server.
