Hey man, don't mean to sound discouraging but just trying to be realistic here. You will not get anywhere trying to battle head-on against industry behemoths like SAP, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, etc. Nothing to do with how good your product is, it's all about the mindshare that their marketing dollars can buy, and I'm assuming (tell me if I'm wrong) that your pockets are not as deep as theirs.

It's much smarter to work within the system (getting well paid in the process), ferret out where their shortcomings are, and possibly develop your own "extensions" to make their product better. There's certainly plenty of scope for this with SAP. Most of these guys have business partner programs and you can use that to give you a leg up in the big end of town. And if you get lucky, they might even buy you out and you can then retire to your private yacht (ok, I can dream).

Coming back to this particular item, there's no guarantee it will take off, but if it does, it can only be a positive thing for Flex developers, and Flash enthusiasts in general. There's nothing like association with SAP to give a technology legitimacy in the corporate space.

Ayudh,

All I can say is good luck if you're building your own ERP system.

Thanks! Appreciate your well wishes.

We'll all be better off jumping on to the SAP gravy train

If I just want to be a programmer, you're right.

As a generic app, SAP *always* needs plenty of customization,
and the rates are way above the standard developer rates for any
programming environment.

From the end client perspective, this is the reason why. SAP has a
reputation with being burdonsome and heavy, which they have tried to
address with MySAP. Implementation can cost as much as the license,
and the SAP CEO is quoted as saying that any customization on
installation will be a big increase in the chance of failure.

I hear Holden makes good cars, so Mazda, Toyota and Honda should just
pack it in.
