Mr SafeFromBees,

Thanks for the heads up on your history:-)

However the only way that the underlying java object would change is if sun
made them all private methods, or that you can't inherit another object. So
as long as CF runs in Java bytecode your very safe in this regards, but as
Mr SafeFromBees points out this could change and become a .Net layer in the
future (god no I hope this would never be considered).

And having said that, if it is to run a BD then forget the java methods now!

erk :P

To explain that -

Some while ago, I ran a site with some friends of mine called
www.safeefrombees.com - it was going to be an area for us to really
play with odd ideas of website stuff.

We all got really busy, and it ended up being a cute little blog for
interesting tidbits we found around...rather than anything totally
astounding ;o)

Hence Steve O's decision to call me Mr SafeFromBees ;o)

Now we got that all cleared up -

It should be noted, that using the underlying Java object in CF is
technically not supported in that MM is perfectly capable of changing
the underlying implementation on any version change as they see fit.

(That being said, there is nothing that stops you directly creating a
java.util.Vector whenever you want a collection)

So if you want to hook into underlying Java classes off CF objects you
need to decide for yourself if you are happy that code *could* break
in the next version.

There are also some really interesting 3rd party libs that are bundled
with CF that are also available (see my recent blog post on Jakarta
Collections) - these fall under the same rules, as there is nothing
stoping them being removed in the next version of CF.

Grant - your best bet is really to go do a Java course to get the
basics of Java under your belt before you really need to worry about
integrating Java and CF together.

Regards,

Mark
