I don't think anyone should have been suprised at the "merger" (in reality
it's a takeover). MM as a company do not make that much money against
software development standards - until ColdFusion came on board all they had
was Flash and DW - and neither we're million unit sellers.

It now takes MM into proper multi-billion dollar company from a simple
multi-million one.

You have to remember, as a company in it's life MM did not have that many
apps of it own - it took the Microsoft approach of buying em in (ColdFusion,
Homesite, JRun, Freehand to name a few). Until MM bought Allaire all it was
Dreamweaver (I am not counting Fireworks as I think it cannot compete with
Photoshop).

If anything, the 2 biggest assets Adobe have gained with the takeover are
ColdFusion and Dreamweaver, bit to be honest with the takeup of Eclipse with
ColdFusion users I can see DW share dwindling (and it's not a large share)

With the backing of Adobe, we should expect more input via marketing than
Allair or MM could ever produce - great for Oz!

Expect changes yes - the end of Freehand for sure, maybe even Fireworks
(unless it can replace ImageReady - which is unlikely). Not sure about
Director (my original tool of choice :-)

I would expect also that there will be some significant layoffs within
Adobe/MM (community managers for sure, and the death of Team Macromedia) as
they start to cut the wheat from the chaff; knowing how large takeovers
work, if you aint got a real beneficial use your out.

You may even see some applications hived off entirely...

Subject: [cfaussie] The new conference for DownUnder

I guess even Daemon were surprised to learn that Adobe were aquiring
Macromedia. That deal is pretty much finished if the European powers that be
agree.

Stunned even. Like most of us.

Remember that Daemon are responsible for the MXDU conferences - a name
largely attributed to Macromedia products in the past before they became the
boring (but cool) Studio 8 range.

Guess what? Daemon are back and the conference is now called "webDU 2006".
This is good on many levels. No longer strictly Macromedia, despite our love
of their products, webDU will cover a wide range of topics. This is really a
conference for everyone. Even Microsoft is a sponsor. Early days yet but
maybe even Adobe will come aboard.

In only a few years Daemon host the best conference of its type this side of
the black stump. Visit www.webdu.com.au for more info.
