I'm curious to know why you need to use PHP. Is it a customer requirement,
or due to cost (or both)?

Not so much a requirement, as an opportunity.

It's a personal project on a shared server. PHP is installed, new appserver-type installations are forbidden. Plus, here at my real job, we primarily code in CFMX but have one project which incorporates a PHP open-source project as its core; I figured the home project may be a good place to get my hands dirty with PHP in case I ever needed to delve into it here at work.
