I understand your concerns, I really do. I had also discounted Flex for pricing reasons, thinking I would just develop RIAs using Flash MX2004 Pro. I would recommend actually getting ahold of the trial edition, installing and developing some before you conclude that Flex is too expensive. After a few hours of developing in Flex, I was a convert. The product is amazing, particularly when you consider it is a 1.0 release. And the time is right for it, market-wise, for a number of reasons.
Flex IS an enterprise level product. It is extremely well documented and thought out. It is extremely fast to develop in. Having completed two large RIA projects going the traditional Flash development method (in AS 1.0), I KNOW the amount of time that can be spent on features that are inherently in Flex. It is clear to me that it represents a massive engineering effort. $6000/CPU x 2 = $12000 = 120 billable developer hours. Without a doubt, that 120 hours can be EASILY WASTED (in a heartbeat) trying to reinvent the wheel with what is already included in Flex. And in the course of 1 project alone. Adding more developers (at far more cost than $12000) isn't going to make them screaming genuises. I learned this the hard way. Flash RIA development is no cakewalk. I don't know about your budgets, but in the next 6 months I am going to save big money and headaches going with Flex and deliver a FAR better end product than I would have otherwise. But in my case, Flex happens to be a very good fit. If the budget isn't there and the requirements don't justify it, then skip it. Flex isn't the right choice for certain projects, period. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Massimo, Tiziana e Federica Sent: Saturday, June 12, 2004 12:00 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [CFCDev] Mach-ii vs. Struts > Keep in mind that MM (and Allaire) failed with both "enterprise" level > products they've offered. Spectra and Generator are history You are forgetting Aria and LikeMinds, another two "enterprise" level products sold by MM, after the merge with Andromedia (anybody remember it?). No need to say, they are history too :-))) Massimo PS Here the *total* budget for many projects is less than the cost for a single Flex's license :-) ---------------------------------------------------------- You are subscribed to cfcdev.
