One thing to be noted here is that SmartCMS has been in development
since about 2000 (in one form or another). As is written in the
"History of SmartCMS" [1] :

"As of July of 2004 the main line of the SmartObjects Content Server has
been moved onto Tigris.org, and has been renamed "SmartCMS". The core
of the system is intact"

The main chunk of the system has been around for a while, so I'd say
Ben's a long way from "starting from scratch" with this! Sure, some of
the functionality may already be present in other systems such as
FarCry, but as has been pointed out the aim of SmartCMS is different.

Also, I know from personal experience that once you've started
something, even if someone brings out a piece of software that's ahead
of your in development terms, that's certainly no reason to drop what
you've been doing. If nothing else there's a certain sense of pride
once you've got something finished... :)
