What kind of problems?

Personally, I'd say that if you are on Windows you should use Tortoise for both CVS and SVN -- I can't imagine it getting much simpler than right clicking on a directory and choosing to create a new project from that.

Can you comment on the setup of Subversion? One of my issues with CVS is
that it is kind of a pain to start a new project, as compared to VSS. Is
Subversion easier in this regard?

I'll second Subversion. CVS is great, but if you are starting from scratch you might as well start with Subversion instead.

Based on your list of things you are trying, be sure you understand the difference between CVS/Subversion and TortoiseCVS and TortoiseSVN (and between CVSNT and WinCVS) -- mainly that the former are servers and the latter are clients of those servers. If you use Tortoise, you get some "integration" with Homesite for "free" because your context menu when clicking on folders (but not files, sadly) should be the same as in Windows Explorer, so your Tortoise commands should show up easily.

If you do use SVN, be sure to check out Trac:

Also, despite my answering an off-topic post, I can't help but urge people to keep posts to this list on topic! ;)

For Windowws clients this is a good GUI:
