I got an error with both IS and EQ. No difference there.
I tried this and it *didn't* throw an error:
<cfset x = "NaN">
<cfset y = 1>
<cfoutput>
#isNumeric("NaN")#<br />
#(x.equals(y.toString()))#
</cfoutput>
I'm getting to this thread a bit late, so you may have already tried
this.
