I’m not sure if all the docs are right then.

 

The main “variables” docs for CF 7 says (amongst other things):

 

+) A variable name must begin with a letter, underscore, or Unicode currency symbol.

 

+) The initial character can by followed by any number of letters, numbers, underscore characters, and Unicode currency symbols.

 

There are other rules, but if you consider “any number” in the above to include zero then this behavior seems perfectly acceptable.  Ugly, but acceptable.  ;^)
