I actually agree with the security warning.
In larger organisations there are (unfortunately) employees who believe that they have a right to other peoples property, etc. Even if used only within an organisation, advertising you are away is highlighting an opportunity for a dishonest employee to take advantage of your absence and (potentially) raid your office area for valuables. And while it is obviously the individuals own fault for not securing valuables, sometimes, what is "valuable" isn't always obvious. Sadlly, memorabilia often goes missing. And that is sometimes more devastating than a few loose coins in a drawer.
Furthermore, if your place of employment has a large number of transient public moving through it, it could also be a signal to external people that there may be some advantage to them during absences.

Actually, this isn't really a big concern for most people, since it's
unlikely that potential robbers will be sending them mail.
However, there are lots of other security concerns with sending mail to
public lists and the like - you can gather quite a bit of useful internal
information from them, in many cases.
