Yes it is personal preference. I actually prefer that the bean know absolutely nothing about how it might be persisted, which means I like to save it in the Service. To me, a domain object should think that it exists forever in memory. So if the Service saves it and it dies, only to be resurrected later by the Service, the bean never even knows anything happened. As far as it is concerned, it was always in memory. The fact that something else put it in "suspended animation" (in the database) is something it is never aware of. But again, just my preference.
