I apologize in advance to anyone reading this who is affected by this, or knows more about this than I, but my understanding is that "west==left/east==right" propagates the legitimacy of a 'north up' map that was created as a response to the at-the-time-south-up maps having Africa/Asia "above" Europe. The result is (I think?) a propagation of a euro-centric/euro-supremacy ideology. Again, thats my 'ELI5' understanding of it.
