Try changing your query to:
<cfquery name="getNames" datasource="dsn">
select
ID,
LastName,
FirstName,
Format(BirthDate, 'mmmm') as Month,
BirthDate,
CountryID,
MailingAddress
from names
order by Month(BirthDate), BirthDate
</cfquery>
You want to order by month first, then date within month. If your
implementation of SQL doesn't allow a value in an ORDER BY that isn't in the
SELECT, you'll have to add Month(BirthDate) to your SELECT statement as
well.
