There's no harm in asking...

My main concern with PHP/mySQL is the support issue. I know that I can buy
gold support from Macromedia and that is something goes into the toilet I
can call them and if required have an engineer fly in...I know, this isn't
the usual, but it can be done. We've used our support plan several times to
solve issues with CF. Point is, there is a support system.

PHP/mySQL is supported only by the lists and commmunities that use it.
While I admire the effort that goes into it, I can't sell this to a
client..."No problem, I'll post the error to the list and see if I get a
reply..." Not a good response...

Or you have to support it in house...for ever...Now, I can't speak for the
rest of you, but I'm not in the business of supporting an application server
environment...at least, not last time I checked...

I can see using PHP/mySQL for simple, low traffic sites. I do know of some
heavy sites that use it...easyDNS.com for one. But they have an army of
developers supporting it.

PHP itself is very interesting. You can do ANYTHING with it...and it is
FREE...but, can you sell that to a client? No. If YOU are the end user I
can see using it. Then you can beat yourself up for ages afterwards when
things go wrong.

I have nothing against PHP, I think it's pretty cool, and a damned site
better than ASP. I don't care a tinkers toss for mySQL, but then I have a
preference for real databases.

It all comes down to support. You get what you pay for.

hey, wait a minute...I pay for wonkos 2000, and through the nose...but get
no support at all...unless I like being on hold for a day or more...this is
breaking down...

You are asking for it.

Certainly, you can't argue that PHP/MySQL is a much better combination
than CF/MySQL. Perhaps if CF had driver support for MySQL instead of
using ODBC this wouldn't be an issue.

But noooo, you have to buy Oracle or DB2 if you want to use a half
decent database on a Unix flavoured CF server. (MS-SQL isn't an
option...what real hosting environment uses Windows servers anyway?)

Now I'm going to retire to my fireproof bomb shelter.

Gee...looks like I can take off my fire-proof pants...I expected to get
flamed something fierce on this one...but then again, this isn't a PHP
list...

...and the only reason someone uses PHP is 'cause it's free...

...now there's flame bait if there ever was some...
