I was just about to comment on the search bar being used for text entry
as well. I always liked that small box which Microsoft Foxpro used to
(still does?) have at the bottom of the screen. A floating text entry
box with a command prompt. Dockable of course.
But what strikes me is that Chandler already has a rather clunky
interface - in terms of the number of things which are tacked on to the
toolbars by default. A good idea here might be to reduce the number of
calendars visible by default on the left to just the current month.
Clicking a small button pops up a 3 month view. The space there might be
utilized to have a small text entry box.
Alternatively, shorten the Event entry box on the right to take up half
the space it does, and make the space left over the default dock for the
new text entry box.
Cheers,

I'm worried that using the text search field as a text entry box will be
confusing.
Searching and text entry are completely unrelated so using the same
widget doesn't seem very natural. Adding drop downs in the search box
which create new events instead of searching will add further confusion.
Without a dropdown or some other discoverable UI most users will never
learn about the feature.
I think it makes more sense to add new UI for this feature. Perhaps, a
toggle to open and close a new text area, or maybe a floating panel with
some buttons (maybe with command keys) that would pre-populate the field
with /mail, /task, etc.

Hi,
I am working on using the Search Bar for quick item entry. For eg:
typing "/event OSAF staff meeting at 10:45am" in the search bar will
create an event in the Calendar . /mail, /task and /note also create
the appropriate items in the dashboard.

Jeffrey suggested that I could create a drop down list in the search
bar (similar to Firefox) and have options like /Note, /Event ,etc in
it, which will autocomplete, depending on what the user types.
I wanted more suggestions and ideas about what to do with the search
bar and quick-entry item stuff and how to use NLP in it.
Please let me know what you all think.
Thank you,
Darshana
