I'm fine with the patch ... having the functionality spread out into
separate functions seems better.
One question: What is the plan for localization of the quick entry
field? So far as I can tell, the new code requires "/event" etc, even
in foreign languages (since it uses the entry point name as the
command name).

It isn't an interop change, its main purpose is to expose quick
entry so
it can be changed by plug-ins. I think the patch is fairly safe.
