I wonder if what we're really wanting (again) is the ability to create a separate, linked Task item with a Tickler Alarm so that you can still see the original event item with the appropriate event date.

My proposal would be:

A) Show start time for events (and only show the event icon, not the alarm icon, in the event-stamp column, so events are really distinguished from notes with alarms), UNLESS, optionally
B) Both the alarm is in the future, and start time is in the past

The second part is optional to me because, personally, an event's very event-ness completely dominates any alarm I've set.  I'm delighted that the alarm will bring the event back to my attention, I don't find that I need to scan for what time I set the alarm for.

Although philosophically I agree 100% with Jeffrey, Mimi's suggestion comes very close - it's reminiscent of good old DateBk5 for Palm, where each event had an 'advance' checkbox. Ticking it prompted the user for a 'number of days advance' figure. A separate 'floating event' was thus created, which was automatically deleted when the original event date arrived. In Chandler, the 'float' would ideally be treated as a completely separate item, allow you to have an event in your calendar, and a corresponding starred item task to buy the gift/book the ticket/feed the cat.

All the best,

Keith
