CRASSH has vacancies for two full-time postdoctoral research associates to work
on the project Technology and Democracy, within the Cambridge Centre for
Digital Knowledge, based at CRASSH. Post One will be in the general area of the
History of Technology and Communications; Post Two will be in the areas of
Surveillance, Media and Politics.
This project is co-directed by Professor John Naughton, an engineer with a
long-standing interest in the public understanding of technology, and Professor
David Runciman, a political theorist with an interest in democracy and
political change. It will explore the implications for democracies of the
forces now bearing down on them. The first phase of the project involves: an
assessment of the extent to which the confluence of contemporary forces is
indeed unprecedented; whether it heralds a significant moment of transition for
democratic societies; and, if so, what shape(s) that transition might take.
Each Research Associate will report to the project co-directors and be expected
to work under their direction to develop (in the case of Post One) an
historically-informed assessment of the democratic implications of digital
technologies and (in the case of Post Two) an informed analysis of the
political economy of a networked society. The RAs will be required to
participate in the regular work-in-progress meetings of the project as well as
attend termly workshops that will bring RAs from a number of projects together.
These include other projects in the Centre for Digital Knowledge and the
Leverhulme Conspiracy and Democracy Project. They will also be involved in
designing the web output of the project and constructing and maintaining a
repository of the data and publications generated in the course of the research.
The successful candidates will hold a PhD in a relevant field of research and
an ability to work in collaborative environments. The Person Profile of each
