I work for them now.  after 9/11 they are a little more through with their investigations.  However, you can still get a clearance even with a bankruptcy, it is just a little harder.  The key to it is be honest, forthcoming, do not make it feel like you are trying to hide something, if anything offer more information than they ask.  Also, make sure other people you work with know about it, that was one of their questions to me, to make sure no one could blackmail me for it.
I was denied an interim clearance for secret, most people get theirs in a week.  They came out a few mos later talked, and only talked about my bad credit stuff, on items over 1000$, and it all stemmed from an unemployment time of 6mos in 2001.  It can take a while if denied an interim to get a clearance, but most jobs say ability to get a clearance.  There was a guy at benning that had to wait over 2 yrs.  Then another guy was there for 4yrs before denied a clearance.
