Richard, I seem to recall someone suggesting putting a few drops of peppermint oil in outside trashcans to keep the rats out. Coincidentally I have used peppermint oil to eliminate a tickle in my throat that caused a hacking cough. John

When the city began its recycling program, I got serious and bought trashcans with lids for garbage and recycling containers. That cut way back.
