Linda and Raul,

The train the trainer issue is a big thing for cracking the hard nut of getting
J into the classroom. J can be difficult to 'get' initially, but one of the
attractions for me is that it remains difficult to 'get' for a good distance
through the learning curve because of its power. This makes it a challenging
language for those who like to master their languages in 24 hours, or need to
use them for instruction. Possibly a solution is to provide a slimmed down
version of J that would provide the tools necessary for the grade level without
having to understand the power of first-class functions. After all, I wouldn't
give a scientific calculator to someone who had just mastered their times
tables, but it would be appropriate to have one if you were exploring the ways
to apply trigonometry in a high school physics course. Just a thought.

I also saw this blog post today [1] that goes a long way to giving a snapshot
of the classroom realities that teachers face, as well as a solution that may
work for creating motivation for using some of the tools of J. The post is good
but also take a look at estimation180.com [2] as a resource for generating
reasoning in the classroom.

I also cross posted into chat as I think if we explore this topic further in
this direction, it has limited appeal to the beta forum.

Cheers, bob
