Perhaps we would do better if we spent more time teaching kids practical skills (use of construction tools, food preparation, flying planes - start with scale models of course, digging ditches or whatever...). Note that any practical skill can be motivating for learning the academic side of things. And tying abstract knowledge to "muscle memory" is a good way to help students retain information. I'm not suggesting that the academic side of things be abandoned, of course. And you'd still need to repeat things and use all the other tactics teachers use to try and keep things on a reasonably smooth keel. But there's lot that could be done to make classrooms more interesting and knowledge easier to hold on to. People need challenges - though one of the challenges with challenges is identifying the right kinds of challenges.
