I spent an hour on webcam/online chat with my wife while she tinkers
with the ASUS eee PC 900. The setup was I'm on my Windows Vista Starter
Edition (I've upgraded it to 2GB memory so it doesn't suck as much) and
my wife was on an IBM T41 and with her webcam pointed at the eee PC. I
was just basically politely telling her what to do. Emphasis on politely
... ;)

Coming from Ubuntu and Windows, we were both amazed on how fast it boots
and shutdown. We tried to explore the installed softwares and
installable ones and concluded that it is a really good PC for our
parents. It got all that a normal person would need to work with a
computer (email, internet, documents and web video chat).

The weird thing is that the Linux system was partitioned weirdly. The
whole unit was supposed to be 20GB but it partition the system this way
/ - 2.7GB
/swap - 1GB
/home - 16GB

The root and the swap was on /dev/sda that is a 4GB disk. It seems that
the 16GB is on another disk device so installing Windows on it will take
some forethought.

Poking around it, my gut reaction was to install Ubuntu or Xubuntu on
it. I believe that the screen is wide enough for work and my wife says
that its soo kawaii ... but feels that the keyboard is so small even
with her slim fingers. Out of the box, it worked with youtube and our
favorite video streaming site http://www.watch-movies.net

One final thing that made me happy was that it comes with a WindowsXP
driver cd and a Linux System Recovery DVD disk. Meaning I can restore
the OS if I muck it up.

The only problem now is how to trick my wife into buying one. ;)

Hehehe. Yep. eeePC is sooo cute (had to translate kawaii ... for people
who don't watch naruto/or any Japanese anime ... teeeheee).

I just gave my wife a call and she tells me that she's sitting on one
since one of the managers in the factory bought the 20GB eee PC 900
series without realizing that its Linux. The guy wants the IT department
to install WindowsXP and a lot of stuff on it. The problem is that their
only external CD/DVD drive is currently broken since somebody did a 20
in 1 DVD Korean movie marathon. Not to mention the drivers hunt for
windows.

Hey! Does anybody have experience using the ASUS eeePC ... windows or
linux version? I am actually wondering if a terminal can be opened in
the linux version to run ./jwd

Hmmmm. I guess it would take some convincing for my wife to get me one
since she still haven't bought me a new bike (Yamaha XJR 400cc) and
currently letting me suffer on my daily 75KM commute with a 150cc
scooter
