Whatever the case, the arriving body information is Base64 encoded - 
and my sendmail corrupts it when it puts together the parts and 
appends it to my shell mail spool file - (sigh). The encoding you 
speak of came from my mail client (I think) and it makes a mess of 
Chinese (and probably other 8 bit stuff as well).

Your straight text message below came through fine. But it isn't just 
the 8 bit characters that trigger the problem. When I look through my 
mail files, I see messages in other forums (e.g. kdb) that have the 
same problem while messages autoconverted from quoted-printable to 8 
bit look just fine. So I think it is definitely my sendmail that is 
producing corrupted results on incoming mail.
