I found an article on multidimensional databases that reminded me of J, and especially J Grid.

For the record, I have my doubts that multidimensional databases do not (formally) fall under relational database theory. My study has convinced me that the underlying set theory is so general as to apply far beyond what its limits are commonly assumed to be. Arguments to the contrary are welcome.
