However,

_ (whether infinity or the negation sign) is not a <digit>

There are two 0 digits.

<number> is not defined  (as used in numeric | number . | number . number )

I presume that the various flavors of numbers  (complex, rational, 
exponential, etc) will be subjected to the BNF treatment

Rules such as "words which begin with  : or with  . MUST be preceeded by 
whitespace. " and others should find expression in the BNF
