Alex, I have a Mac and have only used a single "screencast"
application named Screenium, which only works on Macs and can be
downloaded from www.synium.de . I have been very satisfied. A google
search of "screencast" will give you may options especially if you
focus the search even more.

I think a clever person could take your suggestion and develop
screencasts which would be very useful alternatives to some of the
other resources we have. When you mentioned the idea of a screencast
on rank, I immediately thought more specfically of Chapter 6 in JforC
and more generally of Norman Thomson's J-ottings series in Vector. I
think Thomson's articles provide a natural source of such screencasts
because often he chooses a theme around a J concept. You can see his
articles at the following link, and the one on ranks may be a perfect
framework for a screencast.

Your experience matches mine regarding uploads >: 20mb and this can be
very time consuming. This size bloat has made me attempt to make my
screencasts as brief as possible, trying to stay under 6 minutes per
screencast, if possible. That means that very little detail can be
given, but we can give oral or text links in the scrast to other
detailed resources.

I have listed 4 existing YouTube screen casts at the following link.
They are very amateur productions, but may give you some ideas.
