I recommend a Mac as a hands down best Unix.
... And a pretty good environment overall.
Other OSes are simply so much uninspiring.

The latest example is multi-touch: it is so smooth
and natural on a Mac notebook. There have been attempts
at multi-touch on PC notebooks with some gestures, and
then the latest Wacom Bamboo Touch, which I hoped would
compensate some of the Mac experience on PC. Unfortunately
because of the rigidity of cursor tracking on PC and the
most repulsive surfaces they choose for trackpads, the
impression is simply painful and pathetic in comparison.

These are small things, but they come around in various
instances of use and contribute to the overall experience.
... Which can be summarized in one word: sucks or not sucks.
If PCs were cars they'd be called clunkers.

Macs have x5 times more user share among users than Linux.
And iPhone--the best ever smartphone and PDA--is a whole
upwards of 1/3 share of Linux. iPhone runs on the same
Unix as Mac.
