My copy of J for C programmers was purchased by my office and is part of the
company library (checked-out by me from the library indefinitely). Our admin
staff who acts as librarian actually took the time to put a plastic cover on
the book.

Still, I took care using it even though it's a permanent fixture on my desktop.
(i.e. I don't put another book on top of an open book ... it will break the
spine). It has been passed around a bit but with the plastic cover and my
watchful eye ... still looks new. ;)

If you're wondering whether the unfortunate problem you experienced is
universal, I can contribute that my copy of _J for C Programmers_ has
held up fine under use so far. It doesn't have so much as a broken
spine, much less loose pages. I wish yours had stayed intact, too;
sorry to hear it didn't.
