The jpeg2000 is particularly size-efficient in scanning books (black
and white) but unpopular due to its license issue, I once saw a chinese
company scanned lots of chinese book for its commercial ebook reader
library using this format but changing the file extension and a few
bytes in image header in order to avoid paying royalty to jpeg2000
license holders, IBM, I guessed.
