Rather than create your suggestions in a complete animation, I have animated

Let me know if this is what you had in mind. I added the extra horizontal 
arrow, since without it my bias to reading left to right caused the end result 
to be counterintuitive. I think I still prefer the previous option of having 
the Plus (+) appear in place over the argument, as the design is simpler and 
much more amenable to matrix and vector examples; but before I scale out to the 
full video of your ideas, let me know if I am on the right track.
