TextWrangler is the best text editor I've ever used - and it keeps improving with each release. And, as you say, it is FREE and has terrific user documentation. It is virtually the only thing I use for editing HTML and j scripts in Mac and Linux (it's network file support is nothing short of amazing) and it even accommodates arcane things like CR LF line ends.
For those that like colorized displays, it should be easy to make a good j colorizer. There are other possibilities with running scripts being edited as well, the recovery over a system crash (e.g. power failure) are amazing - seemingly endless possibilities and very well done and stable. (As you can tell, I'm a fan!)
