When the first excavators came on the market
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excavator
there were a lot of people who objected because they took the jobs
from the people.

There are a lot of stories about APL/J that do the same.

If you have the option of taking in one man with a excavator to dig
and it can do in one day what otherwise would give work to a lot of
people for a long time which would you choose.

The choice may seem obvious but it is not.

Over time heavy equipment won out and manual labor could not compete
but it took a long long time.

If you have one hundred people and each one has a shovel and you need
to keep them occupied and busy it may seem silly to bring in an
excavator to do the job.

All the hundred people would be just sitting around doing nothing
while one skilled person would drive the excavator.

You would hear all kinds of objections and very many of them sound
very familiar.
