Same  here  with ubuntu hardy (8.04) and cherokee 0.99.14 from PPA the
user gets logged in and the  user.pref file is created
but squirrelmail returns :

ERROR
You must be logged in to access this page.
Go to the login page

and mail.log  shows


hardy-server dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<THEUSER>, method=PLAIN,
rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured
hardy-server dovecot: IMAP(THEUSER): Disconnected: Logged out
