In my usage of Squirrelmail and Cherokee on gentoo, the result from a fresh install was that, a succesful login but no mail, and then the login page. I fix that changing some owner and group directories, data is one, and i don't remember the others but, data is one. Maybe this help, I think the distribution package (Debian, ubuntu) and the parameters to emerge on gentoo, tells apache is the owner of these directories.
