Well, it depends: Do you want to drop RHEL/CentOS support?

AFAIK RHEL 5.4 (and I guess 5.5 too because the API freeze,
compatibility, support, etc) uses python 2.4.3.

for the support (and python 2.4.3 is the supported version!).

You can install from sources with another bin-suffix, but it could be
great to support REHL out of the box (if possible).
