Hi,

I'm sorry for the late reply - I have been away from the keyboard for
the past couple of days.

Currently, yes, the only thing you can do is to install via the apt
pinning - Now, do this WITH CARE and pull the minimal set of packages
you can, as this is likely to cause other libraries to be pulled in -
i.e. libcherokee-mod-libssl 1.2.2-1 depends on libssl0.9.8 >=
0.9.8m-1; libcherokee-mod-streaming 1.2.2-1 depends on several
packages derived from libavcodec52 >= 4:0.6-1~, or
libcherokee-mod-mysql 1.2.2-1 depends on libmysqlclient16 >=
5.1.21-1. What does this mean? That your server will pull in specific
versions of libraries different from what is available on the Stable
release to satisfy the dependencies... And that can trigger a snowball
where your system is no longer stable, specially as we progress along
the release cycle. And by the time our next Debian release is done, it
could render your whole system unupgradeable.

Besides, even though we Debian developers should never upload to
unstable packages not suitable to migrate towards a stable release, I
have broken Cherokee more than a couple of times during the past
years... And if you follow the Unstable branch (Sid), you will very
likely end up pulling my broken packages! I'd suggest you to follow
the Testing branch (currently Wheezy), but as of right now, Cherokee
is not part of it due to some bugs which don't allow builds to succeed
on some architectures.

What else can be done? Well, Álvaro has requested me to upload
Cherokee backports to http://backports.debian.org/, but I have not
even been able to give enough care to Cherokee as it is now - I don't
want to commit to supporting it as a backport as well. I can only hope
to get some time during the next couple of weeks to fix the current
issues and let Cherokee migrate into Testing again.
