OK, I understand more then I did before about Cherokee, or at least my head hurts less.
FTP is not required, but how do I upload (or) post to site using sftp? Memory is limited because this is running on a seagate dockstar ( plubox ) with linux. ( very cool, very green, use about 5watts including 100g harddrive ) Can a person add users and user passwords to allow uploading to web server? Maybe even a password protected directory? " I'm sure you'll figure it all out, you just need to get into a completely different system compared to what you're used to. And that requires some study of the subject at hand." Is very true any links with documentation on operating, hosting, servers. Namely Cherokee with PHP installed. I like to learn, my 1st computer was a aim 54, worked nothing like the one on star trek. :) Thanks everyone, And have the best day possible!!!, Ron -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Friday, June 10, 2011 5:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Cherokee Digest, Vol 36, Issue 12 Send Cherokee mailing list submissions to [email protected] To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://lists.octality.com/listinfo/cherokee or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to [email protected] You can reach the person managing the list at [email protected] When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Cherokee digest..." So I guess windows has made me stupid. I have Cherokee up and running on a dockstar plug box. My subscribed server will do let me post video files, my goal is to use Cherokee on my home url (rlcoffin.no-ip.com or rlcoffin.dyndns.co) to post family video files, password optional at this point. BUT I AM stupid, I have "putty" to start Cherokee but from there I am stumped. Permanente admin password, rather then the "one time"? How do I upload from frontpage/ or / ms expressions (preferred) or even publisher, I can not even seem to figure out how to ftp because I have no user or password setup. Only need one master website. How do I add Cherokee to plugbox startup list? Yes I find the configure file but how do I edit it? I tried with WinSCP and I seemed close but that did not work for either. Maybe I need to hire a pro, I am just tapped on cash and plan to use server to post my working resume (www.rlcoffin.com/resume) video picture files. Have it running now ( http://rlcoffin.no-ip.com ) thanks. Please steer me to help, I presently am stuck at nowhere. More than happy to list links to Cherokee on posted site. FTP: Cherokee doesn't come with FTP, you'd need to install an FTP server, I'd recommend vsftpd Edit Config File: You shouldn't edit the config file manually, should use cherokee-admin and update server settings cmm On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 10:49 AM, Ron Coffin <[email protected]> wrote: > I can not make it work, I must be stupid - or Linux illiterate, maybe > both > > > > I have used computers for years, have not used syntax since commodore 64. > So I guess windows has made me stupid. Permanente admin password, rather then the ?one time?? Cherokee-admin's passwords are one-time deals. Having a permanent password would be a serious security issue. The same goes for only listening on localhost, Both of these security policies can, however, be disabled. >> How do I upload from frontpage/ or / ms expressions (preferred) or >> even publisher, I can not even seem to figure out how to ftp because >> I have no user or password setup. Only need one master website. Cherokee is not an FTP server. If you do not have one running on your server, you must install one to use FTP. Be aware that FTP itself is an insecure protocol that should only be used on a trusted network (read: not across the internet), and since you already have an OpenSSH server running, you can already use SFTP through that. >> How do I add Cherokee to >> plugbox startup list? Yes I find the configure file but how do I edit it? Check your distribution's documentation for information on adding startup applications. This is not Cherokee's responsibility. >> I tried with WinSCP and I seemed close but that did not work for either. >> Maybe I need to hire a pro, I am just tapped on cash and plan to use >> server to post my working resume (www.rlcoffin.com/resume) video picture files. >> Have it running now ( http://rlcoffin.no-ip.com ) thanks. I'm sure you'll figure it all out, you just need to get into a completely different system compared to what you're used to. And that requires some study of the subject at hand. PS. Please structure your communication. I was almost giving up staring at your wall of text :-) ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Cherokee mailing list [email protected] http://lists.octality.com/listinfo/cherokee End of Cherokee Digest, Vol 36, Issue 12 **************************************** ----- No virus found in this message.
