Most FTP clients also support SFTP, FileZilla is a fine choice. SFTP
will require the same credentials as a regular SSH session.

Cherokee supports password protection of directories, but I am not
sure about uploading.
In your rule you can specify authorization on the security tab (in
cherokee-admin).

Since you say that cpu and memory is limited on your device, you'd
probably be better off without PHP since it can be quite resource
hungry. I have no idea which distribution your plug device runs, so
any advice would be very general.
There are many resources on Linux and Unix in general, and a Google
search will show many of these.
