you are absolutely right. 70 station wagon and el camino and 71-72 station
wagon  & el camino are different from the sedans, hardtops and convertibles.
the book don't give a reason though. well i just learned something. maybe you
can interchange if you replaced the whole front end all at once? a lot of
parts are said not to work but i remember taking a 2 door hardtop door (68)  
and a crunched up el camino door (68) and making a nice el camino door.
