Sounds like he's defective and should be replaced - he's a frigging idiot.  If that were the case then every 71-72 454 out there would have replacement heads.  Go to http://www.mortec.com and review all the block and head casting numbers for big blocks.   There is an engine ID number stamped on a pad in front of the passenger side head that will at least identify the block.  CPA, CPD, CPR, CPG, and CPP identify a 71 454 in the Chevelle.   On 72's, the engine size was part of the VIN...example the letter "W" in the fifth position identifies the car as a 454 (270hp).
